April 2013 Preliminary Answers

Determining potential answers for the broker's exam questions after the test is different in a few key ways from taking the test, but none is more key than the fact that we have more than four hours to give our answers. That means that we can take the time to research as much as we need to in order to get the most accurate (though still unofficial) document possible to all of you.

Click here to get our preliminary unofficial exam answers as a free download from our online checkout system.

As always, remember that these answers represent only our opinion. The official answers will come from Customs and Border Protection in a few weeks and will be posted on their site. In other words, we probably answered the majority of the questions correctly, but these answers do not guarantee whether or not you've passed; it merely is presented as a helpful tool for broker students who are (quite understandably) eager to have any idea of where they stand.

If you would like to share your answers, explanations and comments, we invite you to post them as comments to this blog; however, we ask that comments be professional and to the point. We cannot respond to all of the comments, but this forum will provide you an opportunity to converse with each other.

Happy browsing!

I am quite sure that D is also a correct answer to Q 24. There's actually a ruling (HQ 084990) stating that a portable fax machine with a telephone and answering machine is a composite machine:

"Each model in issue is a composite machine: a telephone handset, a telephone answering device and a facsimile machine, all of which are joined together to form a whole which performs separate functions, either consecutively or simultaneously. These separate functions are complementary."

Is there any reason why D is not a valid answer?

When Customs does post the official answers on their website, will it come with some sort of announcement? I keep checking everyday but nothing has changed. Should I be looking on this page http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/trade_programs/broker/broker_exam/

or the "exam and key downloads" section on that page?

There has been no announcement that I am aware of in the past. On the CBP website go to the exam and key downloads section. Currently it shows Oct 2012 test and answer key. When they have posted April 2013 the Oct 2012 will have been moved. I have been checking every day as well :)

Thanks! Do you suppose the reason they have not released the answers at this point is because there are more questions then usual which will be removed or credit given to multiple answers?

Do you guys release an answer key with explanations as to how and where you got the answer? I can't help but think this test is rigged for failure for the general public.

Anonymous -- We actually do publish with explanations, but it is a part of our paid preparation course.

Has anyone heard any news about the potential delay or cancellation of the October 7th 2013 exam due to the shutdown?

FYI, the October 2013 broker exam was cancelled in the port of St Louis. CBP failed to show up to proctor the exam, causing 23 test takers to be sent home without actually taking the test.
